One Small Step – Dancing Astronauts Series

Artist Statement:

With One Small Step, I wanted to do something different—something softer, more playful—but still grounded in imagination and that curiosity about space that never really goes away.
I’ve always loved astronauts. There’s something so iconic about that shape: the bulky suit, the visor, the sense of isolation and adventure. But instead of going the serious or heroic route, I asked myself, “What if they danced?” That idea came from watching my kids at their ballet classes. They were floating around the room, totally immersed in the movement—and suddenly it clicked: astronauts kind of move like dancers, too. Especially on the moon.
From that idea came this series of sculpted astronauts frozen in different poses, each one inspired by a style of dance. There’s one mid-pirouette, another in a graceful lift, and one that’s just a sweet little moment of connection between two figures. They’re weightless but grounded. Serious but playful. And I think that contradiction is what makes them fun to look at.
Each piece is made from cast marble resin with a gold chromed visor, giving it that dreamy, otherworldly look. The white finish keeps it minimal, so it focuses attention on the form—the motion. The moon base footprints are a little bonus touch because, well, it felt right.
These sculptures are about movement, joy, and imagination. They’re not trying to say anything deep—they’re just meant to make you smile and maybe see astronauts (and maybe yourself) a little differently. It’s my take on that iconic moon landing line… but instead of one small step for man, these are small, dancing steps for anyone who’s still curious.
