Artist Statement:
Riot of Liberty is my reimagining of the Statue of Liberty—not standing tall and still, but caught mid-movement, mid-defiance, mid-something. She’s not just holding up a torch anymore—she looks like she’s about to throw it.
I wanted to challenge how we usually see symbols like this. The Statue of Liberty is supposed to represent freedom, welcome, and hope. But what happens when that same symbol is angry? Or frustrated? Or ready to fight for the thing it supposedly already stands for?
This piece was heavily inspired by political art—especially that sense of urgency you get from protest posters, graffiti, and moments of unrest. You’ll notice the pose references Banksy’s famous Flower Thrower, but here, it’s Lady Liberty herself stepping into that role. Maybe she’s throwing the torch. Maybe she’s passing it on. Or maybe she’s just had enough.
There’s also the twist: is this an act of violence, or of reclaiming power? That’s up to whoever’s looking at it. I’m not here to tell people what to think—just to make them stop and ask the question.
The sculpture is cast in bronze, and we gave it the same green patina as the real Statue of Liberty in New York. That makes it feel both historic and current, like it’s pulled straight from reality but stuck in a new moment of action.
I made only 29 of these. It’s meant to be rare. Raw. A little unsettling, but also kind of empowering.
